Three Squared Instructional Technology Tips - October 6, 2023

We thought that sending out anything in the first month of school would be too overwhelming. So we saved our updates for you until now! Rather than sharing everything in a slide deck like in years past, we're keeping it all in the email to make it easier for you to access. As always, you can make an appointment with us right on our website if you'd like to learn more about any of these nine items or anything else in the world of instructional technology.

3 Awesome Tips:

  1. CANVA FOR EDUCATION - TEACH WITH CANVA TUTORIALS: Did you know that Canva is an amazing graphic design platform? You can create all sorts of cool stuff like posters, slide decks, and even podcasts. The best part is, we have free access to Canva for all teachers and students at Bonny Eagle! We've been working with a bunch of teachers this semester and their students have been making some seriously awesome assignments with it. If you're interested, we can set up a time to chat and show you more about how Canva works. Let us know if you're game!

  2. GUARDIAN SUMMARIES IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM: Did you know that the only way parents can know what their student is doing in Google Classroom is through the guardian summaries? They cannot see scores nor can they log in, but you need to turn them on for each class to have your Classroom included in the summary. If guardians want to check their email settings, send them this link: https://classroom.google.com/u/0/gs

  3. INTERACTIVE PROMETHEAN BOARDS (GOOGLE FORM APPLICATION): Have you seen the interactive boards in the coaches rooms and wanted to bring one to your classroom? Bonny Eagle was the recipient of a grant to bring more interactive Promethean boards to the district. In order to find them a home, we have created an application process so that administrators can decide where they will go. Applications are open though the end of October if you are interested in having one in your classroom!

3 Updates to Know:

  1. GOOGLE EARTH: Last school year we worked hard with the tech department and the district's lawyers to find a solution to replace Google Earth, which cannot be used by our students because of privacy. ArcGIS Earth has become our replacement and has been available in Self Service since last school year. As such, Google Earth will no longer be available on student iPads on November 1st.

  2. GOOGLE JAMBOARD: Google has announced Jamboard will be shutting down at the end of 2024. It will work for the rest of the 2023-24 academic year.  If you use Jamboard with students, please reach out to us so that we can support you in transitioning away from it.

  3. GOOGLE SINGLE SIGN ON CHANGES: On October 23rd, Google is changing how the "Sign in with Google" option works on websites for our accounts. The tech department has already been on top of it and has been making sure that your access to approved tools will not be going away. If you want us to verify a specific site will be available, please reach out to us. If you are using a website/app with "Sign in with Google" and we do not have a signed student data privacy agreement, your access may be turned off on October 23rd.

  3. BOOK TIME WITH US: We want to make it super easy to set up a meeting with us. You can do so right on our website without needing to email back and forth! Just pick the date and time that works for you and we'll be there! We also offer 15 minute sessions right on Google Meet if you need support sooner rather than later.

An example of a student choice menu that has students chose one item from each "course". I've been working with a teacher lately who has struggled with her students completing a summative paper in her class. This trimester, we're working together to find a way to increase buy in and hopefully have a higher percentage of students complete the project. How fast are you? Ok, how fast is your internet??

With a week left in October, it'd be awesome if we got more teachers (and students) at our schools to click on the link in the message below to do a free one minute SchoolSpeedTest! It only takes a minute and we'd love to get more data. Thank you for your help! As we continue our October SpeedTest Month, we'd like to thank all of you that have participated in the School Speed Tests.  So far, we have had over 60% of Maine districts take part, with some schools performing over 150 tests so far!  However, we still have some districts and schools that have yet to take part.  The good news is that there is still plenty of time to do so!  All we're asking is that each school in your district perform 10-20 tests before the end of the month! I think by now every who has followed this blog knows that I take in a TON of information each day in hopes of finding you information that I deem to be useful to pass along to make your day easier. I feel a bit like a clearing house in that regard. Many have told me that technology is awesome, but that it is so hard to determine what tool to use and when not to mention learn how to use it.
