ACTEM will be hosting our annual fall conference virtually this year on

October 20-21, 2020. 


This email contains important changes and information about this year's conference.


First…

As we mentioned previously, the ACTEM Fall 2020 conference will be virtual online. ACTEM explored various platforms for hosting the conference and decided on the Hopin Virtual Event platform.

Second…

ACTEM is offering the conference for FREE to all current (2020-21) individual members.  If you are not a member of ACTEM you can join for the $20 annual individual membership fee.  We know school budgets are impacted in these difficult times, so we want to provide this valuable PD experience for a very modest cost (just membership).  Members are not automatically registered for the Fall conference you will need to go to the following and complete your  Registration for the conference.


Third…

We have adjusted the schedule to mid-afternoon/evening because of these uncertain times and varied status of districts plans for school this fall (in person, hybrid or totally online learning).  We have also adjusted the schedule to shorter 45-minute sessions.   The schedule is included in this email and runs from 2:30-8:00 PM on the conference days. Over 70 workshop sessions will be offered over the two days and details of the session offerings can be found at the links below:

    Oct 20th - Anthony Johnson, Jr.

    Anthony Johnson is not your regular educator who followed a traditional path in life. Early on, he had to endure a myriad of hardships, which caused him to drop out of school on several occasions. For Anthony Johnson, failure was the only option he had, however, it did not deter him from pursuing a life-long dream of becoming an educator. After obtaining a GED and working hard to provide for his family financially, Mr. Johnson earned a Bachelor's degree in education. This was the impetus for the innovative educator he has become today. What makes Anthony Johnson a gem is that he cultivates and fosters a learning environment unlike any other seen in this country.

    Oct 21st - Kerry Gallagher

    Kerry is the Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning at St. John's Prep in Danvers, MA. She is also the Director of K-12 Education for ConnectSafely.org – internet safety non-profit in Palo Alto, California – a FutureReady Instructional Coach, ASCD Emerging Leader, Adobe Education Leader, PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator, and EdSurge Columnist.

    An example of a student choice menu that has students chose one item from each "course". I've been working with a teacher lately who has struggled with her students completing a summative paper in her class. This trimester, we're working together to find a way to increase buy in and hopefully have a higher percentage of students complete the project. While investigating options for her, the first thing that came to mind was using a choice board or learning menu to enable her students to select the method that would work best for them rather than prescribing a multimedia project.     How fast are you? Ok, how fast is your internet??

    With a week left in October, it'd be awesome if we got more teachers (and students) at our schools to click on the link in the message below to do a free one minute SchoolSpeedTest! It only takes a minute and we'd love to get more data. Thank you for your help! As we continue our October SpeedTest Month, we'd like to thank all of you that have participated in the School Speed Tests.  So far, we have had over 60% of Maine districts take part, with some schools performing over 150 tests so far!  However, we still have some districts and schools that have yet to take part.  The good news is that there is still plenty of time to do so!  All we're asking is that each school in your district perform 10-20 tests before the end of the month!     I think by now every who has followed this blog knows that I take in a TON of information each day in hopes of finding you information that I deem to be useful to pass along to make your day easier. I feel a bit like a clearing house in that regard. Many have told me that technology is awesome, but that it is so hard to determine what tool to use and when not to mention learn how to use it. Fortunately for you, that's pretty much my job (so use me!). In a recent summary of links from the Diigo education group, a member had posted a link to Katie M. Ritter's Backwards EdTech Flowchart.
