3D Printing Inspiration for Math

So many of the projects that I've been working on lately have been off in the universe outside of my blogsite. I think that's likely pretty common this time of year as we start to wind down for summer and many start to focus on file retention, etc. rather than digging deeper. Or some are looking to do project development with me getting ready for this fall.

One of the projects that has been keeping me busy are the new Makerbot 3D printers and 3D scanner that we recently received, which are going to be placed in Bonny Eagle Middle School this fall. As I work with folks in technology to iron out the details and look for our best practices, I have also been gathering ideas for how this awesome technology could be used in all of our classrooms to dig deeper.

I have been using Pinterest to assemble my ideas because I like the visual nature of the tool as opposed to some of the other methods out there.

As we head into the weekend, I wanted to take a moment to feature the ideas I have found for math classes. Two of my favorite applications are to print tessellation patterns and then Cartesian planes to make it easier to model ideas in 3 dimensions as opposed to drawing them on the white board. Other more obvious ideas include printing geometric shapes and theory models and spirograph tools. Although likely for a younger audience, the math spinner ideas I've found would be an awesome "fidget toy" for those kids who just can't still or for those that need more practice with equations.

If you are interested in checking out all the ideas I've discovered for using a 3D printer in your math classes, head on over to check out my Pinterest board. Although it is free to join, you don't need to in order to check out what I've pinned so far.

  1. Using a 3D scanner in a construction project is so common nowadays. Because a 3D scanner can visualize a to-scale model of what is being built long before you start construction and it helps to complete the construction of the project accurately. Best 3D laser scanner
